Queen Elizabeth II almost lost her heir after Prince Charles got targeted by terrorists in Wales.

For years, Queen Elizabeth II has been known for being stoic regardless of what issue bombards her and the royal family. However, a new biography revealed that she almost broke down once after Prince Charles almost died while having an engagement in Wales.

Historian Jane Ridley recently looked back at the incident after reviewing Robert Hardman's new book, "Queen of Our Times." According to the historian, Prince Charles' investiture at Caernarfon was designed by Snowdon. But it became a target for Welsh nationalists, a group of terrorists, that they almost claimed the life of the heir to the throne.

Luckily, the Prince of Wales managed to escape the bomb that threatened his life.

"Hardman reveals how shattering this was for the Queen. For the first time, she canceled her engagements and came close to breakdown," Ridley added, as quoted by Express.

The former sergeant with the Army's Dental Corp, John Jenkins, reportedly plotted the masterplan to interrupt the ceremony. He was then failed for ten years and became a social worker until his death in December 2020.

Still, the bomb that exploded in the venue killed two members of the Welsh paramilitary group Mudiad Amddiffyn Cymru. The day after the incident, two more bombs were reportedly planted in Caernarfon, one of which exploded when the 21-gun salute was fired.

Prince Charles Became Major Security Risk During Princess Diana's Funeral

It was not the first time the Prince of Wales faced a death threat, though.

A royal documentary previously revealed that the heir to the throne's safety was considered at high risk when he attended the funeral service for Princess Diana.

Per Netflix's 2013 series "The Royals," Ingrid Seward said Prince Charles received death threats since everyone blamed him for Princess Diana's death.

Royal author Andrew Morton shared the same sentiment, saying that there were fears that the Palace of Westminster could be torn down due to public anger.

"During the arrangements for the funeral, there were conversations between Downing Street, and Buckingham Palace and at one of these meetings, they said 'Well, look if William and Harry decide not to follow the funeral cortege, Princes Charles cannot do that on his own," Morton said.

At the same time, the royal family suffered from condemnations as Buckingham Palace failed to make the Royal Standard at half-mast.
