Jung Hoyeon's Return to 'Squid Game' After Character's Death POSSIBLE: Director
Jung Hoyeon might still be part of the next "Squid Game" installment.
The instant popularity "Squid Game" earned led its showrunner, director Hwang Dong-Hyuk, to consider a second season. Its multiple records hailed it to become one of the most-watched series on Netflix. It even dethroned the once top series, "Bridgerton," by having 1.65 billion viewing time in the first four weeks of release.
Although Lee Jung Jae's Seong Gi Hun became the last man standing in the series, director Hwang Dong Hyuk is now considering bringing back the dead character played by Jung Hoyeon.
In an interview with Deadline over the weekend, the filmmaker said that he remains open to bringing back some of the series' deceased characters.
"Most of them are dead. I'll try something to bring them back to season 2. Let's say maybe she has a twin sister, you'll see," he said while pointing to the model-turned-actress Hoyeon.
Hoyeon, in return, quipped that she could change her hair color or undergo plastic surgery to make it happen.
The South Korean actress immediately gained popularity through the series that she and her co-stars recently earned awards and recognitions from different award-giving bodies. One of which is the outstanding actress in a drama series award at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
During the event, "Squid Game" also became the first non-English-language series and the first South Korean series to score a SAG Award. Lee Jung Jae also won the outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series.
Director Hwang Dong-Hyuk Has THIS Reason To Consider "Squid Game" Season 2
His new comment came months after he decided to create more plotlines for the series.
Director Hwang Dong-Hyuk previously said that the show's first season could already be good closure to end the franchise. With that, he ended it in an open-minded way, letting the viewers think about what could happen next.
But due to its continued success, he confirmed he is already in talks with Netflix for a season 2 and 3 of "Squid Game."
"There will be more great games, that's all I can say. I'm just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for season 2. I haven't even started with the writing yet," he said. "Who can expect this kind of success? I tried hard to make a successful show, but I never expected this much success. It's a surprise."
