The next new character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is upon us and so far looks to be one of the darker tales to come out of Phase 4. Oscar Isaac plays Marc Specter aka Moon Knight, a ex-soldier suffering from dissociative identity disorder who is imbued with the mystical powers of an ancient Egyptian moon god.

Jeremy Slater, head writer on the show, was interviewed by Variety at the red carpet premiere recently, where he discussed where he got some of the inspiration for the look and feel of the series.

"I came and wanted to go with Raiders of the Lost Ark. I want to see some Ghostbusters. I want to bring some horror into the MCU and some scary monsters, and really push that envelope as far we can. Kevin [Feige] and Marvel were so supportive of that, so we really just sort of used Kevin as our litmus test in terms of finding out if this is something we should pull back on."

Slater confirmed the executives behind the project made their decisions through what the majority of those in the production meetings wanted to go with, leading to the darkly cinematic take we have seen in the trailers thus far.

"At every turn he really pushed us to tell the best story and not worry about pulling back or pulling our punches. It's definitely still appropriate for all ages, that was important to us. We didn't want to make something that was inaccessible to a big chunk of the MCU fanbase and we know people watch these shows with their kids and their families, but I was like 'Let's get as PG-13 as we possible can!'"

It would be nice to get a truly gritty take on certain MCU characters, given that not all comic books are for all ages. Have you seen The Punisher? But with Disney at the helm, understandably the reins have to be pulled back. Hopefully, Moon Knight will give us enough of the seedy underbelly fans occasionally crave from their comic properties.

Mook Knight premieres on Disney+ on March 30th.
