After the shocking events at this year's Oscars, where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in front of a celebrity-filled audience and viewers at home, The Academy said they would be reviewing the incident. But why would it take a few weeks?

According to a letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members obtained by E! Online, a spokesperson for the organization said it would take time to complete an official review of the actor's actions.

The reason why it would need a few weeks is that they will undergo a process. As outlined in the organization's bylaws, the Academy's Board of Governors will determine what action they will do after the incident.

They will also follow a process as governed by California law.

Elsewhere in the letter, the Academy said they will be conducting an investigation in "a manner that is both expedient and respectful of all involved while maintaining the standards of the Academy."

The organization will be updating its members about any developments in their organization, but they should "respect the process."

The letter also states that they condemned the "King Richard" actor's actions, and they were outraged by the incident as it overshadowed the celebration of the film industry's works.

Why Did Will Smith Slap Chris Rock?

The investigation comes a few days after Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock on stage while presenting the "Best Documentary Feature" award.

The comedian joked about Jada Pinkett Smith's hairstyle, saying he can't wait to see her on a "G.I. Jane" sequel.

The "Red Table Talk" host has been open about the reason behind her shaved head hairstyle as she has been diagnosed with alopecia.

Upon returning to his seat, the actor shouted, "keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth!."

The actor later won the Best Actor award and has since apologized for his actions.

Will Smith Apologizes to Chris Rock

In early reports, the "Men In Black" star took to his official Instagram account to finally addressed the altercation.

Smith started his statement by saying he condemns all forms of violence and admits that his behavior was "unacceptable and inexcusable."

He added that jokes at his expense are a part of the job, but a joke about his wife's alopecia was "too much" for him to bear.

The actor then apologized to the comedian, saying he was out of line and wrong for his actions.
