Helen Mirren Refuses To Read Film Reviews Anymore Because of THIS Reason
Helen Mirren has been working in show business for decades now, and her latest film, "The Duke," has received positive reviews after it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. However, despite the praises it amassed, the actress said she doesn't read reviews anymore.
In an interview with People Magazine during a special screening of the movie in New York City, the 76-year-old star said she used to read reviews when she was starting in the industry, but she later found it "very disruptive."
The veteran actress didn't care whether the reviews were good or bad as both had a negative connotation to her.
"The good ones gave you an unrealistic sense of how good you were and the bad ones just destroyed you, so I don't read reviews," she added.
Despite her stance on reading feedback, the Oscar Award-winning star said reviews give actors a sense of how a movie has been received, which is "incredibly important."
Helen Mirren on 'The Duke'
"The Duke" revolves around the story of a 60-year-old taxi driver who stole a portrait of the Duke of Wellington by Fransisco Goya from the National Gallery in the 1960s.
The actress said she was drawn to the film as it was a "well-written piece."
In addition to how it was written, Mirren commended director, Roger Michell, saying he has a "wonderful body of work," which is another reason she accepted the role.
"I cleared the decks for this one because I knew this was going to be a great experience," she added.
After filming the movie, the director passed away at the age of 65 in September 2021. The actress recalled the time when she was working on set.
Mirren said Michell created a feeling of family, which is the reason why she reflected so much in the movie.
Speaking about what the movie is all about, the veteran star said: "The Duke" is a "comedy," but behind the comedic lines, there's a "heart of tragedy," and she thought the director did a brilliant job in combining the two.
"It is one seamless thing, the way life is. Life is a sort of seamless mix between tragedy and comedy," she added.
Initially, reports did not state Roger Michell's cause of death, but Helen Miller said the director died very suddenly of a heart attack.
