BREAKING: Will Smith Has Been Banned From The Oscars For 10 Years Following The Slap, Academy Rules - Does He Get To Keep His Oscar?
In a decision just announced by the Academy moments ago, Will Smith has been banned from the Oscars for ten years.
The decade-long ban is in response to Will Smith's assault on Chris Rock during this year's live ceremony; he slapped the comedian across the face for making a bald joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, who has alopecia.
According to a statement issued by Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson on Friday:
"The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards."
The hearing to determine Smith's future with the Academy was originally slated for April 18, but it was moved up after the actor - who, ironically, just won the Academy Award for BEST Actor - resigned from the organization.
This ten year ban not only means Smith won't be able to go to the Oscars, but also means he won't be able to attend any Academy-sponsored events either. It does not, however, prevent him from being nominated for another award, or take the one he has away.
Some fans of Smith's online think the ruling is far too excessive:
Others think they're not doing enough:
Still others seem to agree with the ban:
And others have simply moved to point out that his might make for some very interesting headlines next year.
