Dwayne Haskins' Last Moments 'Very Disturbing'; Man Called 911 Before Fatal Crash
A man reportedly witnessed Dwayne Haskins' last moments before the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was hit and killed by a dump truck.
Haskins' fans were left shocked after 7 News WSVN in Miami first confirmed his death, stating that a dump truck struck him while he was crossing the Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale. He was later pronounced dead on the spot.
A few days after the fatal incident happened, a man talked to NBC 6 South Florida and shared details about how he saw the 24-year-old athlete before the crash.
According to Chris Stanley, he was dropping off his daughter at the Fort Lauderdale Airport on the morning of the accident. While he was on his way home, he spotted vehicles veering into his lane.
"And what I noticed was a Mack truck, or a big tractor-trailer, with also another vehicle that started moving a little bit to the left," he said. "I was in the left lane, and then there was the right lane. And then I noticed an individual there starting to make their way onto the road."
Dwayne Haskins' Last Moments Looked Disturbing
Stanley said that the man, who is said to be Haskins, raised his arm a little but appeared as if he was about to collapse into the highway.
After seeing the man, Stanley reportedly felt concerned that he dialed 911. He also shared a screenshot of his call log, showing that he had a call with 911 at 6:31 a.m. It was six minutes before the Florida Highway Patrol officials reported the time of the crash at 6:37 a.m.
When asked whether he had an idea what Haskins was attempting to do on the highway, Stanley said he could not explain the moment but called it "very disturbing."
A probe by traffic homicide investigators into the fatal crash is currently underway. Even Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda said it is unknown why the athlete was on the interstate.
"He was just walking on the highway and got hit," Miranda told The Associated Press.
Meanwhile, FHP authorities told CBS Miami that Haskins was seemingly attempting to cross the westbound lanes but got hit instead.
It remains unclear whether the driver of the dump truck sustained any injuries.
Haskins' sudden death caused Steelers and his former teams - Commanders and Ohio State - to remember his legacy and pay tribute to him.
