So Twitter Has Decided That The New 'Thor: Love And Thunder' Trailer Is Really, Really Gay
At long last, the new trailer for the much-anticipated Thor sequel Thor: Love And Thunder has arrived, and while it's not giving very much away in the way of plot, there are other aspects of the film that come across loud and clear - especially to not-so-eagle-eyed fans on Twitter.
The new trailer gives us a first peek at Natalie Portman as the new Thor, and conversely sees Chris Hemsworth's Thor looking to slow down, even retire, from the emotionally taxing duty of being a superhero in a galaxy whose problems only seem to keep gettting worse.
Speaking of the galaxy...that's who Twitter is all atwitter about; Guardians of The Galaxy star Peter Quil, AKA Chris Pratt, makes a major showing in this trailer, and it's...pretty darn gay.
The main moment that fans really latched onto, of course, is the one where Quil is trying to give an impassioned speech about looking to the ones you love, looking over at his team (or maybe just at Mantis, which would be a new development) as Thor not-so-subtly tries to inch in front of his gaze.
This isn't the only thing in the trailer that's got queer energy to it, though - fans have also latched onto the clip of Thor seemingly gallavanting about space in a flying pirate ship, romantically dancing with a blue-haired woman on the deck. If there's one thing director Takia Waititi has taught us recently, it's that pirates were notoriously gay. (This is a plug for Our Flag Means Death, his fantastic pirate show on HBO Max.) (And blue hair is pretty queer too.)
This isn't exactly a surprise - Taika Waititi has been making films with what I call the Bisexual Gaze since long before he was ever asked to do anything with Marvel. The amount that this trailer clearly resonates with the LGBTQ+ community has been heard and felt, on Twitter and many other places. Tessa Thompson even recently revealed that there was a scene in Thor: Ragnarok which confirmed her character Valkyrie to be bisexual.
We also got an update to the Marvel canon in 2020 that confirmed Starlord to be a bi character as well. That's why many of these users are also taking delight in the fact that Chris Pratt, who is known to be fairly religious and politically conservative, might not enjoy that bit so much.
Of course, it is worth pointing out that this little bit of schaedenfreude isn't really based on anything but public sentiment, as Pratt has never come out making any sort of statement on the LGBTQ+ community except to defend his church against claims about their stance (though at this point, silence says a lot too.)
In any event, the new trailer promises a film every bit as epic and cool as Thor: Ragnarok, as well as that Guardians of The Galaxy edge we all know and love. We can't wait to get more details from a longer trailer - which will probably come out when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters May 6.
Thor: Love and Thunder will be released this summer, on July 8.
