TWO TIMES THE WICKED! Film Adaptation of 'Wicked' Staring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo to be Split Into TWO Movies! Here is Why!
Wicked, the movie musical starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, will be split into two movies.
This news is WICKED! The smash-hit musical Wicked has been talking about a film adaptation for years. Recently, those dreams have started to become a reality. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have taken on the lead roles of Glinda and Elphaba. The two have been working hard to bring the wonder of Wicked to the big screen. Now, however, it seems as Wicked will be making its way onto the screen not just once, but twice. According to an article on People, the highly-anticipated movie will now be split into two different films.
This news is sending shock waves through the theatre community. It is likely that the split will fall where intermission would typically fall in the stage performances, but that is just a guess. We do know for certain that the division of the work is out of a quest to allow the material to dig deeper. Especially with a show as well beloved as Wicked, the creative team knows that the stakes are high when it comes to the adaption. They want to both honor the original production while still surprising people with something new.
The director of the film, Jon M. Chu, wrote a letter announcing the news and posted it on social media. In the letter he explained, "
"Here's what happened...As we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it. As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years...So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but TWO!!!!" he continued. "With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters."
We are so excited to see these TWO movies hit the big screen!
