Netflix Releases an Official Teaser for New 'Resident Evil' Series
Fans of the Resident Evil games rejoice! Earlier today, Netflix released an official teaser for its new Resident Evil live action series.
Based on the hit horror game franchise by Capcom, the Resident Evil series is set for release on July 14, 2022, and stars Lance Reddick, Tamara Smart, and Ella Balinska in key roles.
The story of the Resident Evil games revolves around the evil Umbrella Corporation an evil company that developed something called the T-virus, and other mutagens, to be used as bio-weapons - and it's discovered that the virus has the capacity to turn humans into zombies and animals into horrifying monsters.
The original game and many of the film and TV adaptations take place in the fictional Midwestern town of Raccoon City, which is surrounded by Umbrella Corporation labs. The characters are often fighting with new factions as the virus gets out, and causes outbreaks all over the world.
Though the Resident Evil franchise has gotten multiple TV and film adaptations over the years, the constant criticism by fans of the games is that none of these on-screen adaptations seem to follow the games' story. Prominent examples of these adaptations are the six live action Resident Evil films released between 2002 and 2006, which were all directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and star Milla Jovovich as original character Alice.
There was also a 2021 reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which was written and directed by Johannes Roberts, and starred Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia, Donal Logue, and Neal McDonough.
Due to the lack of faithfulness to the game in these adaptations, fans don't seem to be all too hopeful about the Netflix live action series - though it may be too early to tell.
The teaser seems to show the Umbrella Corporation and its experiments with the virus on a rat, while also introducing us to some human characters, and giving us a sneak peek at what the zombies might look like.
As we flash through some disturbing images, we hear the 1971 pop song "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony)" playing underneath.
