Emo Didn't Die, It Just Took A Nap: MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE RELEASED A NEW SONG.
Go get the black eyeliner, and make sure the G key on your piano is well-tuned: My Chemical Romance is really, truly back.
We can practically feel the energy of a thousand former emo kids rising from their slumbers in confused excitement today, because last night, My Chemical Romance - the most Emo of all the Emo bands out there - officially released a new song.
The band My Chemical Romance officially broke up on the 22nd of March in 2013 - nearly ten years ago. They stirred up the fandom some in 2014 when they released the ironically named single "Fake Your Death," but since then it has been mostly radio silence on the music release front.
The band did announce a reunion tour shortly before the pandemic - fans eagerly and frantically scrambled to get tickets, only for the whole tour to be cancelled due to Covid.
They have been touring since, and are even headlining the Firefly music festival this summer, but there has been no whisper of anything new from them - for all their fans knew, this was merely a reunion tour.
Until now.
Yesterday, MCR released their new song "The Foundations of Decay," and it is, in every way, exactly what fans would have hoped for in a new song from the likes of Gerard Way, Mikey Way, Frank Iero, and Ray Toro.
The song itself is a six-minute tirade against those who fight to defend the status quo they built even when it begs to be destroyed - about youth rising up and having the courage to destroy things that don't work. As with most My Chemical Romance songs, it's a protest song full of rage, and steeped in the angsty bitterness at the state of the world that is so central to what Emo is.
Unlike many bands who go on hiatus only to return, "The Foundataions of Decay" does not appear to stray into an entirely new genre or attempt to "modernize" their sound (not that there's anything wrong with that - it can just be quite jarring for devoted fans) - despite the almost-decade away, My Chemical Romance has somehow remained exactly who they are as a band.
Also, Frank Iero is apparently playing the whole song with a knife, instead of a guitar pick. So that's on-brand.
We are so, so, so excited for this new My Chemical Romance era - between this and Halyey Williams' new podcast, (plus Paramore touring again), there's no doubt about it: Emo is BACK.
(We wonder if the new song will feature on the upcoming season of Umbrella Academy?)
