The first look of Mindy Kaling's new animated series Velma has been released.

Mindy Kaling is a genius icon of unmitigated hilarity. Therefore, hopes are high when it comes to her new animated series Velma. This new HBO Max cartoon is a Scooby-Doo spin-off that focuses on the iconic mystery gang character (you guessed it), Velma.

A first look photo was shown at the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation. It was tweeted out with the caption, "First look at the adult animated series "VELMA," which reimagines the beloved Scooby-Doo character, presented onstage at the #WBDUpfront by creator Mindy Kaling."

The cartoon photo shows Velma standing over what looks to be a dead body in a locker-room filled with people changing.

Of course, there has been nonsensical backlash surrounding some elements of the character. (Of course.) Kaling shared in a 2021 interview on Late Night With Seth Meyers:

"When it was announced that I was going to do the voice of Velma, people were very supportive and happy on Twitter. And so I felt great.

"Then it was announced a month ago that the Velma character would be reimagined as South Asian. And people were not happy. There was a lot of, like, 'So not Velma!' Those kind of tweets. 'Not the classic Velma that I'm always thinking about.'"

The incredible Kaling has something to say to the haters.

At the Upfront presentation she shared,

"Hopefully you noticed my Velma is South Asian...If people freak out about that, I don't care."

She is an icon.

We can't wait to see Velma when it hits HBO Max on May 22nd, 2022.
