Soccer Player Regan Gibbs Dead at 25: Was Kansas Jayhawks Player Murdered?
Former Kansas University soccer player, Regan Gibbs, was found dead inside her apartment. She was 25.
WIBW-TV reported that the responders found her critically injured on Monday afternoon. Unfortunately, she was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The Lawrence Police Department's officers arrived at the apartment after receiving a call at 7:26 p.m.
The authorities also busted Gibbs' 26-year-old husband, Chad Joseph Marek, at the scene. Kansas City Star revealed that he has since been charged with first-degree murder, and the investigators now consider domestic violence as a factor that led to the athlete's death.
Gibbs' husband is currently detained on $1 million bail. The prosecutor cited the excessive brutality of the crime.
Marek purportedly called 911 and confessed that he killed her. Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart told Fox 4 in Kansas City that the murderer said he killed his wife because "God told him to do it."
With that, police are also investigating his mental health.
"There obviously are some preliminary indicators that this person wasn't mentally stable. We call it being in psychosis, so obviously, that is something we will be investigating as well as this case continues," Lockhart said.
His Facebook page also contains concerning posts, including COVID-19 vaccines to Satan.
Deputy District Attorney Joshua Seiden disclosed that Marek had 10 prior convictions before killing his wife, including interference with law enforcement, battery, and interference with the medical emergency crew.
He will appear before the court on May 24.
Regan Gibbs' Teammates, Friends Grieving Over Her Shocking Death
The emergence of the news left the University of Kansas soccer program members in deep shock. The coach Mark Francis of the school's soccer team, penned a statement on their website.
"She was a tremendous teammate and young woman, and touched so many during her time at Kansas. Regan will always be remembered for the impact she had both on and off the field. We share our condolences to her family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time," Francis said.
Director of Athletes Travis Goff also expressed how devastated they are to hear about the recent loss.
Gibbs played as a goalkeeper for the University of Kansas from 2015 to 2018. She also had the lowest goals-against average by a first-year goalie in the history of the Jayhawks.
Hannah Lewis launched a GoFundMe account for Gibbs and her family to cover the expenses for her memorial.
