As 'Better Call Saul' Comes to a Close, Bob Odenkirk STILL Doesn't Get Why We Like Him
Better Call Saul is coming to a close, and Bob Odenkirk is helping us understand why we are drawn to his character Saul.
The character originated in the iconic series Breaking Bad. This spin-off into a second anti-hero series has become as beloved as the original.
While Saul is definitely the villain of the story, there is a part of the viewers that are drawn to him in a compelling way. But even after playing the character for so long, Odenkirk is still trying to figure out why this is the case.
In an exclusive interview with The Los Angeles Times, he plainly stated:
"Saul's not a good guy...He's very selfish. So I don't think it's that."
Upon greater reflection, he credited a lot of feeling that fans have for the character may connect back to the major shift in the cultural mindset we experienced when the pandemic hit.
He reflected that he thinks the "outpouring of warmth," for the character "came from COVID, which freaked everyone out and led to this feeling of 'Can we just not have more bad things happen to us for a little while?'
"And then, you know, I'm not a movie star. I'm just a guy who acts and works hard. I think people see me and think, 'If I was an actor and had a great bit of luck, I'd be like him. He's not a flashy guy. He's not even particularly gifted. He just shows up and goes to work.' People can relate to that. And maybe that provoked a certain amount of empathy."
We are sad to see this complex and captivating character go, but we are excited to see what projects Odenkirk embarks on in the future.
