'Exploding Kittens' Game Bursts onto the Scene Next Week Ahead of Eponymous Netflix Series
If you were into the Russian roulette-style party card game Exploding Kittens, then rejoice! Netflix is debuting Exploding Kittens - The Game, a mobile version of the game that is arriving alongside a dozen or so other mobile game offerings that the streamer hopes will help retain subscriptions after its stocks dropped 35% and subsequent mass layoffs.
Created by the Oatmeal comics' Matthew Inman, and game makers Elan Lee and Shane Small, Exploding Kittens is a card game where players draw cards while trying to avoid an exploding kitten card, which takes them out of the game. Players use strategy to plan and sabotage each other, while skirting demise at the hands of an exploding kitten.
Adorned with cute drawings by Inman, and filled with quirky ideas like a "portable cheetah butt" that would allow you to skip your turn, and "thousand-year back hair" that would allow you to attack another player.
The mobile game version will function similarly, and will be available for free to subscribers. Players can play alone or with up to five friends, as long as the friends are also Netflix subscribers.
The Exploding Kittens mobile game will be available starting on May 31, 2022.
Additionally, the Exploding Kittens mobile game will be arriving ahead of an Exploding Kittens Netflix series that's set to debut in 2023.
The series stars Lucifer's Tom Ellis and Lucy Liu and will be an adult animated series. According to Variety, Exploding Kittens will be about "the eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell as it reaches epic proportions when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth - in the bodies of chunky house cats."
