Not Known For Comedy: Rob Zombie's 'Munsters' Remake Looks Like It Should Never Have Been Resurrected
When it was announced that Rob Zombie was going to remake The Munsters into a feature film, my mind harkened back to some of his past cinematic endeavors; he has had far more misses than hits.
With the exception of The Devil's Rejects and The Lords of Salem, both of which were mediocre at best, he has not really made a film worth showing up for. Now, a teaser trailer for The Munsters dropped to further solidify my opinion.
This looks pretty awful.
Normally, I would hold back on an opinion based on a trailer alone - and, in this case, a teaser - but what I just witnessed was more of the same.
The trailer begins with the groovy theme song we all know and love, and a spoof of the show's intro where Herman bursts through the front door of 1313 Mockingbird Lane, followed by his wife Lily and his father in-law Grandpa.
Now boasting that it's in color, you see the character designs, warts and all.
The wigs look like wigs. The make-up is a caked-on mess. And besides Sheri Moon Zombie, the wife of Rob (who will always have work as long as he is making films), I don't really know anyone in the cast. Unlike, say, The Addams Family remake, The Munsters looks like an over-produced sitcom - leaving me to wonder if that is the joke in all this.
Known for his touture-porn style storytelling, Zombie's love of all things old-school horror is on display, and looks as cheap as some of the cheesy old horror flicks he holds so dear. His films never have well-done comedic moments, so what makes him the right choice for The Munters other than his love for the source material?
Even the trailer seems unsure of itself, when Grandpa utters the line, "So, now what?"
Maybe I'm jumping the gun. Maybe the movie will be a heartfelt tribute to the memory of the series. Maybe. But from the little, unfunny snippet released today, I don't have much hope that I'm wrong.
There is no release date at this time.
