Netflix Drops 10-Second 'Squid Game 2' Teaser with Iconic Red Light, Green Light Doll
Yesterday, Netflix dropped a brief, 10-second teaser for the highly anticipated Squid Game 2. In addition to the teaser, writer, director, producer Hwang Dong-Hyuk released a statement about how "a whole new round is coming."
The teaser consists of a closeup on the eye of the terrifying red light, green light doll as she says her now iconic line: "The Mugunghwa flower bloomed," to indicate that she's about to turn around in the game.
As she says this, the circle, triangle, and square symbols emblazoned on the Squid Game's guards' masks appear, and the doll's pupil dilates and displays the number "2."
Though the second season of the Neflix breakout hit has a rumored release date of late 2023 or early 2024, the teaser manages to raise excitement without revealing much. Possibly because of this air of mystery, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk released a statement with additional details about what fans can expect in this new round of the notorious game.
"It took 12 years to bring the first season of 'Squid Game' to life last year. But it took 12 days for 'Squid Game' to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director and producer of 'Squid Game,' a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show."
He then goes on to reveal which Squid Game characters are set to return, including Lee Jung-jae's Seong Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun's Front Man, and Train to Busan star Gong Yoo's "man in the suit with ddakji". Hwang also reveals that fans will be introduced to the killer red light, green light robot Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su, who is presumably just as deadly as his partner.
Hwang's statement concludes with a call to action:
"Join us once more for a whole new round."
With details slowly coming through, anticipation runs high for the next season of Squid Game. And with the first season ending on a cliffhanger and the success and awards it garnered, season two is going to have a tough act to follow.
Best of luck to Hwang, and the Squid Game team! We're looking forward to seeing what twisted game they've cooked up next.
