Netflix Drops Trailer For 'Matilda,' A New Musical Film Based On The Roald Dahl Children's Book
The Roald Dahl children's book Matilda, which has since been made into a feature film and a Broadway musical, is coming to Netflix.
The film will be based on the musical which tells the story of a neglected, yet, exceptional young girl named Matilda Wormwood, who loves to read and eventually develops the ability to move objects with her mind. Constantly berated by her family and Miss Trunchbull, her child-hating principal, Matilda decides to turn the tables on the adults with her newfound abilities.
Starring in the film will be Emma Thomson as the dastardly Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch playing Miss Honey, Matilda's teacher and confidant, Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, and Alisha Weir as Matilda.
You may remember Danny DeVito directed and starred in the 1996 film, which was a straightforward adaptaion of the book starring Mara Wilson in the titular role. This later gave way to the onstage musical from 2010 for which the Netflix film will be based.
Directed by Matthew Warchus, the trailer for Netflix's Matilda seems to have the gritty look of the DeVito version with a healthy dose of the magic from the musical. Thomson is unrecognizably brilliant in her Trunchbull make-up and gravelly voice, while the musical numbers shown seem impressively choreographed and performed.
Netflix's Matilda will be dancing onto the streaming giant on December 22.
