MR. HERMES, THAT'S T! T. Oliver Reid Takes Over For Andre De Shields as Hermes in 'Hadestown'
T. Oliver Reid has officially taken over as Hermes in the Broadway production of Hadestown.
On May 29th, Andre De Shields stepped out of his Tony Award winning role of Hermes in the Broadway production of Hadestown. De Sheilds made the role iconic, contributing to the show's god-like immortality. The famed actor announced that he would be leaving the role, soon to move to the upcoming limited run production of Death of a Salesman. The question has been posed by the theater world is who would fill the iconic role? As of last night, the answer is officially T. Oliver Reid.
Opening with the role last night, T. Oliver Reid will now be personalizing the line, "Mr. Hermes, that's me!" The Broadway star began performances in the role on June 14th. While he may be new to the permanence of his role, he is no stranger to the show. He has worked with Hadestown for some time regularly understudying for the roles of Hermes, Hades, and various members of the worker's chorus. Back in March, he went into one performance to take over the role of one of the Fates. This year has proven once and for all that everyone should love and support their understudies and swings.
T. Oliver Reid joins other relatively new cast regular Jewelle Blackwell who has recently stepped into the role of Persephone. That role had been originated by the Tony nominee Amber Gray. Both performers have shoes of mythic proportions to fill, but both have proved that they are up to the challenge.
