Jurnee Smollett To Reprise Her Role From 'Birds Of Prey' In Solo 'Black Canary' Move For HBO MAX
After the success of Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, it was only a matter of time before a spin-off of one of the many anti-hero side characters would come to fruition.
Well, kids, the day has come.
Black Canary, the woman with the supersonic voice, will be making her solo film debut on HBO Max. Jurnee Smollett, who played Dinah Lance in the Margot Robbie flick, is excited to talk about the upcoming solo project.
While talking with Comicbook.com, Smollett expressed her jubilation about the role:
"I'm just so incredibly excited about a number of things that I can't talk about...I feel like we've only touched the surface with Black Canary.
"And she's one of the dopest martial artists in the DC Universe. That is something that is a real challenge in my head that I'm just excited at the possibility of being able to explore deeper and further and wider and greater."
Though the character Smollett is playing is not the original iteration, but rather her daughter, it will be interesting to see where they take her.
Black Canary has been in the Justice League, as well as had a relationship with Green Arrow - aka Oliver Queen. This could make a cool side plot - though given the female-driven film this version spawned from, it's more than likely that Misha Green, who is penning the script, will leave the male love interest out of the equation.
Any way you slice it, Black Canary was one of the coolest parts of the Birds of Prey flick, and it will be fun to see where Smollett and Green take the character.
