Olivier Award Winner Giles Terera to Star in First Ever National Theatre's Historic Production of 'Othello:' This is Why It's Huge!
Olivier Award winner Giles Terera is set to star in a historic production of Othello at the National Theatre.
Giles Terera is an outstanding performer, known for his excellent work both on the stage and the screen. The performer won an Olivier Award for his work as Aaron Burr in the London production of Hamilton. Now, he is ready to take the stage in a new and iconic way.
According to an exclusive on Deadline, Tererea is set to star in Othello as the title character at the National Theatre.
The production is being directed by Clint Dyer; This will mark the first time that a black man has ever directed Othello at the National Theatre.
Dyer shared with Deadline his excitement surrounding this upcoming production.
"I want to make it thrilling, make it feel like a movie experience. I don't want it to necessarily be held in just an old-fashioned theater form. I do hope I can make it feel more impactful by using other techniques, such as video screens, than just using the words."
Dyer is excited to explore the text in a nuanced and powerful way that the previous white directors of this show have been unable to access. He pointed out that these other directors were not "comfortable with being able to articulate the black experience through the piece - and instead they'd just avoid it. And so that the National having a Black man direct it through a black lens...is beyond belief."
We are so excited for this historic production to take the stage and screen.
