The U.S. swim team was disqualified for a 0.01 second mistake in their 4X100 medley relay final at the World Swimming Championships in Span that included Nathan Adrian, Matt Grevers, Ryan Lochte and Kevin Cordes who were seen looking up at the final score in disappoinment and disbelief.

The men's team would have won the race on Sunday if Cordes would've left on time. He dashed the blocks 0.01 of a second too early.

"That's like a punch in the gut right there," U.S. men's head coach Bob Bowman said after the decision.

The error was noticed as backstroker Grevers, who was in the lead, came in to hit the wall. Sensors on the blocks allow for swimmers to leave .03 of a second before the wall is touched, but Cordes jumped at .04 of a second.

"It's as much my fault or more than Kevin's," Grevers said. "The guy coming in is usually the one responsible. I kind of slipped off my start and got a little more tired than I wanted to at the end. I probably had a slower rate than I was anticipating," Grevers added.

Anchor Nathan Adrian swam the final leg and touched the wall first. Initially the team celebrated the win shortly before seeing seeing the disqualification on the scoreboard, resulting in France being the winners.

Coach Bowman said the team will move forward from the "DQ."

"It's a big step up to come here," Bowman said. "This is a great learning experience, because DQ-ing a relay in the first world championships of the quad is one thing, doing it in an Olympic prep competition would be 10 times worse, right? So it's a good learning experience and they have to go back and rethink how they're going to react to things in this environment and do better."

Cordes took to Twitter to express his disappointment for losing.

"Really tough night to swallow. Thanks for all the support it was an absolute honor to represent my country!" he wrote Sunday.
