H.E.R. will be taking on the role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast.
ABC is gearing up for a live musical special of the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast. Airing Broadway caliber musicals live on air, allowing them to be streamed for a widespread audience than may be available to make their way to New York. These past musicals have boasted impressive casts, and this upcoming enchanted castle is no exception. It has been announced that musical sensation H.E.R. will be taking on the leading role of Belle in the upcoming ABC special.
The Grammy Award winner is thrilled to be taking on the historic role. The musical icon shared in a statement:
"I can't believe I get to be a part of the Beauty and the Beast legacy. The world will see a Black and Filipino Belle!...I have always wanted to be a Disney princess, and I get to work with two wonderful directors Hamish Hamilton and my favorite, Jon M. Chu. It is very surreal and I couldn't be more grateful."
Jon M. Chu, who directed In the Heights, is directing the project. He is as thrilled to have H.E.R. in the production as. she is to be in it. In his statement she shared:
"With her obvious extraordinary talent and stage presence, H.E.R. is the perfect embodiment of our Belle, and we are thrilled for audiences to see her in this celebration of creativity...We were both influenced as storytellers by the original animated movie, so it's very exciting to collaborate together to honor the artistry of that timeless classic while also inspiring a whole new generation of creators."
