Brittney Griner Sentenced 9 Years in Prison: Justin Bieber, Mia Farrrow, More React
WNBA star Brittney Griner receives the verdict that is not in favor of the star, which garnered different reactions from the celebrities including Justin Bieber.
Griner is found guilty in Russian drug trials after being detained for over five months. The member of the WNBA is sentenced to 9 and a half years in Russian prison after "smuggling" drugs [vaping cartridges] which breaks the heart of the fans and other celebrities.
Justin Bieber took to Instagram as he posted on his IG story about his sentiments with the judgement of Russia saying in text that "THIS HURTS" while saying "If anyone knows of anyway I can help please let me know."
Mia Farrow also shared her reaction in her Twitter account saying that the Russian judge ignored the defense of the star and sentenced her to 9 years in a "penal colony" because she carried two vaping cartridges which are medically prescribed. She summarized her post with the word "heartbreaking."
Andy Cohen, Eric Idle and Author Greg Olear also tweeted their reactions about the verdict.
Cohen wanted to "bring Brittney home," Idle wants to share his sentiments about the 9 year sentence of Griner and Olear is emphasizing that Griner is a "hostage" insisting that the Russian government kidnaps the WNBA star.
But someone appears to be answering the view of Olear when comedian Tim Young said in text that Griner is not a "political prisoner" then he explained that Griner carried drugs that were not legal in Russian government and was arrested for that, reiterating that there's nothing "political" about the decision.
Marina Blagovolina and Alexander Boykov, Griner's attorneys, said that they intend to submit an appeal.
"She's very upset. Very upset, very stressed," Blagovolina said of Griner. "She can hardly talk, honestly, so it's a difficult time for her."
Griner apologized to her loved ones including her parents for the pain that her detention has caused.
Admittedly, she said that it was an "honest mistake" that she packed the vape cartridges inside her bag and she had no intention of breaking Russian drug law but the prosecutors ignored her explanation and found her guilty of the offense and asked her to pay a $16,500 fine.
Meanwhile, Charge d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Russia said that "this is a miscarriage of justice" and assures that the U.S. Department of State has determined that Griner was wrongfully detained and the verdict cannot change that determination.
