Is Prince Charles the New King After Queen Elizabeth II? Future of Monarchy Explained
Questions about Prince Charles' status and the future of the monarchy emerged following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
After months of health scares, Queen Elizabeth II ultimately died on Sep. 8. Prince Charles penned a statement to deliver the news, in which he was referred to as the His Majesty The King.
Author of "Young Elizabeth: The Making of the Queen" Kate Williams recently said that Prince Charles is yet to be called a King as he needs to wait for another year for the coronation.
"The coronation ceremony usually takes a year because it's seen as unseemly, really, to have a coronation ceremony straight after someone's death. It's a long period of mourning," she explained to PEOPLE.
However, Politico noted that he would take an oath a day after the Queen's passing.
The date of coronation will be set in the next few months - or a year - as Queen Elizabeth II herself was officially crowned in June 1953, over a year after her father's death.
But once the proclamation happens, Prince Charles will finally be King while Camilla will be named Queen Consort, as what Her Majesty wished.
Although he will not be able to wear a crown until his coronation, Clarence House already confirmed that his official title would be King Charles III.
As for the possibility of Prince William taking the throne instead, it is not possible as they need to follow the proper accession to the throne.
With Prince Charles now living by the name King Charles III, his son Prince William instantly became the first reserve to the throne, followed by his children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Prince Harry, who left his senior royal post, remains fifth in line to the throne.
Prince Charles' Coronation Process
Associated Press recently explained how the coronation would take place.
Prince Charles - now King Charles III - be proclaimed as the new sovereign once the Accession Council meets. Privy Council and leaders of the Church of England are expected to start the process.
King Charles III will then swear an oath before the public proclamation of his succession. The coronation will likely happen at Westminster.
Meanwhile, his wife, Camilla, will have her new title styled as Camilla, Queen Consort. During Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, she gave her support to Camilla and announced that she would be known as Queen Consort as she serves King Charles III.
