Director Woody Allen Teases Upcoming Film Project Amidst Retirement Rumors
Marking his 50th movie, filmmaker Woody Allen debunks retirement speculations by teasing his upcoming movie in Paris.
Woody Allen made a name for himself as a veteran film director, writer, actor, and comedian for more than six decades in Hollywood and multiple Academy Award-winning films. Known for his work in the 90s as a comedy writer, Allen went on to direct renowned film titles including Sony Picture's "Midnight in Paris" and "Magic in the Moonlight".
In a recent interview with the Spanish newspaper, La Vanguardia, rumors surfaced of the 86-year-old veteran director retiring after filming "Wasp 22", based on his statement: "My idea, in principle, is not to make more movies and focus on writing".
Retirement Rumors Debunked
However, following the retirement speculations, a representative of the "Manhattan" director sets the record straight in an interview with Variety, clarifying what Allen meant in his statement.
"Woody Allen never said he was retiring, nor did he say he was writing another novel." The veteran director's representative told Variety. "He said he was thinking about not making films as making films that go straight, or very quickly to streaming platforms is not so enjoyable for him, as he is a great lover of the cinema experience."
Woody Allen's Next Film Project
In addition to the debunked rumors, Allen's representative teased Woody Allen's next film project, which was revealed to be set in Paris.
"Currently, he has no intention of retiring and is very excited to be in Paris shooting his new movie, which will be the 50th." Woody Allen's representative explained.
Vanity Fair reports that Allen's next movie, which remains unnamed, will be "similar" to his 2005 psychological thriller film, "Match Point", as the film is being hyped up as a "poisonous romantic thriller" that will be "exciting, dramatic and also sinister".
While the plot still remains under wraps, French stars Valerie Lemercier and Niels Schneider have been revealed to star in the upcoming project. The film will reportedly start filming in France next month with a $10-million range budget.
The 86-year-old director has been known for shooting films in Europe for decades with titles like "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", "To Rome with Love", and "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger". Notably, Allen had lost major support in the U.S. following controversial sexual abuse allegations in 2021.
