Judi Dench Calls Out ‘The Crown’ for Royal Family Depiction, Wants Netflix to Do THIS Every Episode
"The Crown" has been on Netflix for many seasons now and the show mainly revolves around the lives of the Royal Family. However, one of the most renowned actresses in the United Kingdom is calling out the show for its depiction of the royalties.
According to Variety, Dame Judi Dench wrote an open letter to The Times UK regarding the popular TV show, saying the portrayal of the royal family is "cruelly unjust."
Although she clarified that she supports artistic freedom, she wanted the streaming giant to add a disclaimer at every beginning of the episode, telling viewers that the stories being presented in the show are fictionalized.
"The closer the drama comes to our present times, the more freely it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism," she shared.
The legendary actor noted that there are "wounding suggestions apparently contained" in the new season, especially about King Charles plotting for his mother to abdicate from the throne, she believes that the show is unfairly evil for the royal family and the institution associated with them.
Even though the show noted that their storyline has always been "a fictionalized drama," they should still add disclaimers in every episode for the sake of a family and a nation that recently lost someone, Queen Elizabeth II.
This was not the first time "The Crown" was called out to add a disclaimer in every episode because in 2020, UK Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden asked the show to clarify that their stories have been fictionalized.
'The Crown' Defended by Creator Peter Morgan Amid Backlash
The show is under scrutiny online as many fans believe that they have been exploiting the royal family, especially after Her Majesty died last month.
Season 5 will be released in a few weeks and it would reportedly tackle some of the most controversial moments that happened within the royal family. It includes Princess Diana's divorce from then-Prince Charles, which was highly publicized at the time.
Creator Peter Morgan revealed that people already knew and accept that the 1990s was a hard time for the family due to the drama that happened between King Charles and the Duchess of Wales, but he clarified that history wouldn't be unkind to him or the monarchy.
He added that he has sympathy for the monarch and his position and people are more understanding than what others expect.
