After the incident, his agent revealed the permanent injuries Rushdie sustained after the incident.
Agent Andrew Wylie told Spain's El País (via Deadline) that the author is on his road to recovery. However, he ultimately lost his eyesight and ability to use one of his hands.
He did not reveal whether Rushdie remains in a hospital, but the representative said assured everyone he survived the attack.
"[His wounds] were profound, but he's [also] lost the si ght of one eye ... He had three serious wounds in his neck. One hand is incapacitated because the nerves in his arm were cut. And he has about 15 more wounds in his chest and torso. So, it was a brutal attack," Wylie said.
He sent the same statement via text message to The New York Times, adding that the recovery period would be long since the injuries are severe.
What Happened to Salman Rushdie?
Rushdie was about to deliver a public lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York, when a man stabbed him in the neck, abdomen, and other parts of his body.
He was rushed to the hospital via air, where he underwent surgery. At that time, Wylie said the novelist was put on a ventilator with a damaged liver and severed nerves in his arm, and his family was already expecting him to lose an eye.
Rushdie was taken off the ventilator days later, but he remained in the hospital for a few more weeks.
The suspect is currently being held without bail.
The author has been receiving death threats ever since he released his book, "The Satanic Verses." It explores the Satanic Verses of the Quran and includes killings, bombings, and attempted killings. He also used a provocative name for Muhammed, angering the Muslims.
In 1989, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa - or a religious ruling - to order Muslims to kill Rushdie. Due to this, he was forced to go into protective hiding.
