Just in time for Halloween! Windsor Castle's ghost stories have been put under the spotlight recently, including the horrifying story about the ghost that appears before a Queen or King dies inside the residence.

Among the royal residences, Windsor Castle reportedly remains the most haunted place due to several ghosts and spirits stories that royal family members and staff have been experiencing in the past decades. In fact, even Queen Elizabeth II herself had several ghostly encounters.

Several news outlets, including My London, listed all the infamous experiences people faced inside the castle.

Some insisted that one ghost even showed up before the deaths of the monarchs.

The ghost in question is Herne the Hunter, whose spirit reportedly appears in Windsor Great Park when the king or queen nears their deaths. It also occurs when the nation is in danger.

Stories about Herne the Hunter's sightings started as the legend of a keeper in Windsor during King Richard II's reign emerged. The staff had animal antlers attached to his head after sustaining hunter injury.

The king acknowledged his bravery, but other huntsmen grew jealous of him that they accused him of using black magic and committing theft. The following day, he was found dead.

Windsor Castle was built in the 11th century, becoming the largest and longest-occupied castle in Europe. With that, it is not surprising that the Queen herself experienced those sightings, as well.

Queen Elizabeth II's Ghost Experiences

Aside from Herne the Hunter, over 25 ghosts reportedly appeared to the late Queen in recent decades.

Currently, it serves as the final resting place of the previous monarchs, including King Edward IV, King Henry VIII, King Charles I, King George III, King George IV, King William IV, King Edward VII, King George V, and King George VI.

Per HouseBeautiful, Queen Elizabeth II and her sister, Princess Margaret, saw Queen Elizabeth I's ghost roaming around the library.

Witnesses also spotted King George III in Windsor Castle as he peers from the window of one of its rooms. King Henry VIII also drags his leg, creating horrifying sounds as he moves inside the castle.

Even the ghost of the late king's second wife, Anne Boleyn, is seen as the beheaded woman who stands by a window and weeps.
