Matthew Perry Wouldn't Have Just Drowned, 'Friends' Star May Have Suffered A Relapse: Ex-Girlfriend
Matthew Perry, who had been sober for years, shocked fans when he died last month in an apparent drowning. However, his ex-girlfriend suspects that he might have suffered a relapse before his demise.
Perry died at his home in Los Angeles on Oct. 28. He was 54. Kayti Edwards, a former model and Julie Andrews' step-granddaughter, suspected that he had suffered a relapse in the week before this death. Edwards and Perry met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in 2006 and briefly dated after that. They remained close following their breakup, with her working as his assistant in 2011, per the Independent Singapore. She suggested that his use of his alter ego, "Mattman," on social media was a clear indicator that he could have been high.
"I don't believe he just drowned in his Jacuzzi, that doesn't sound right," Edwards told The Sun. "I know Matthew, and I know that he wouldn't have just drowned. I think he might have taken pills in the week leading up to this."
She added that she wasn't surprised there were no prescription painkillers at the scene because the "Friends" star was careful and didn't leave drugs lying around. She also claimed that Perry was "paranoid and would take them all," leaving no evidence. He would allegedly "go out for more when he was ready."
Although a friend who met Perry the day before he died believed he was "100 percent sober" and "extremely positive," Edwards pointed out some clues that allegedly indicated otherwise. Five days before he died, Perry shared a snap of him in the Jacuzzi and signed it "Mattman" on Instagram.
"That Mattman thing was not something he did when he was sober," Edwards explained. "Mattman would come out when he was not sober, and he felt kind of invincible. I was around when he was getting high, although I was not getting high with him, and when I would say maybe he should cool it a little bit with the drugs, he would say, 'No, I'm Mattman.'"
Edwards also claimed that Perry had a "thing with water when he was doing drugs." She recounted an incident when his neighbor in Hollywood Hills allegedly found Perry naked and high in his swimming pool, and she had to go over and get him out of the pool.
Based on the death certificate obtained by Entertainment Tonight, he was found in a hot tub at 4:17 p.m. His cause of death is listed as pending investigation as the medical examiner's office still awaits toxicology and lab results.
