Dean McDermott Breaks Silence About Tori Spelling Split, Hasn't Seen Kids For 5 Months
Dean McDermott broke his silence for the first time about his split from his wife, Tori Spelling, blaming it on himself for his addiction problems.
McDermott sat down for an interview with the Daily Mail. He reflected on his marriage with the "Beverly Hills, 90210" star and shared some details about how it fell apart, with the "Chopped Canada" star admitting how his addiction to booze and prescription drugs took a toll on their relationship. He praised his ex and acknowledged his shortcomings as a husband and father by mentioning how his alcohol-fueled rages "petrified" Spelling and their kids.
"All Tori's ever done to this day is want me to be happy and healthy, and I inflicted a lot of damage and pain on that woman," McDermott said. "I'm taking accountability for that today. And it's the biggest amend that I'm ever going to have to make."
According to the "Open Range" star, there were times when he passed out, leaving Spelling worried and frantically checking on him to ensure that he was still alive. He entered rehab over the summer and is now clean.
McDermott said he turned to alcohol because it "made me feel good." However, he also acknowledged that it eventually led to isolation, leading him to "brokenness" and ruining his beautiful marriage to Spelling.
McDermott hasn't seen Spelling and their children for five months after he moved them out of their rented home due to a mold problem at the end of June. However, he has started communicating with her via text and wants to see their children.
Even if their marriage didn't end for a lifetime, McDermott clarified that he had no regrets about spending all those years with his wife.
"It was a total fairytale. I mean, it was a beautiful love story. Love at first sight and getting married in the most beautiful way possible," he said. "After we got married, they were all saying, 'Give it six months.' Well, so much for six months - we showed you because it's been 18 years and five kids."
For years, there had been rumors that McDermott and Spelling's marriage was on the rocks, but the couple neither confirmed nor denied it. Also, they were still seen regularly with their children.
However, on June 17, McDermott announced on Instagram in a drunken post that they split after being married for 17 years. In a since-deleted post, he wrote that they "decided to go our separate ways and start a new journey of our own," Us Weekly reported.
Earlier that week, Spelling and McDermott were still seen together for their daughter Stella's 15th birthday at the Beverly Hills Hilton. Days prior, they also brought their four children Stella, Hattie, 11, Finn, 10, and Beau, 6, to the Stand for Kids Gala in Los Angeles.
Both have since moved on from each other. McDermott is now in a relationship with Texan Lily Calo, 32. Meanwhile, Spelling is dating advertising agency CEO Ryan Cramer.
