Woman’s Kidney Stone Infection Leads To Legs Amputation; Her Arms Are Next
A 40-year-old woman from Kentucky is spreading a message of hope despite suffering a kidney stone infection that will leave her a quadruple amputee.
Last December, Lucinda "Cindy" Mullins, a passionate healthcare worker, suffered a kidney stone infection, which caused her body to go septic.
Because of this, she was rushed from a hospital in Stanford to one in Lexington, per WLEX-TV, a TV station in Lexington.
After being sedated for days, she woke up with her legs already amputated and the news that her arms would be removed next.
"At that point, I have lost my legs from the knees down bilaterally, and I'm going to lose my arms probably from my elbows down," Cindy shared.
According to her, the doctor she used to work with told her that amputating her limbs was what they had to do to save her life.
Despite what happened to her and what she had to go through, she shared that she's "just happy to be alive."
"I get to see my kids. I get to see my family. I get to have my time with my husband. Those are minor things at this point," she continued.
Cindy also shared how grateful she was for all the calls, texts, prayers and things people sent her and her family.
"I just can't fathom that people are doing things like that for me," she said.
After her story was featured on WLEX-TV, a GoFundMe fundraiser was set up by Heather Beshears on behalf of the Mullins.
"We started this fundraiser because we want to support our hero Cindy, as well as her husband DJ, who has been by her side every step of the way," wrote Beshears.
On the page were updates about Cindy's status at the hospital -- her treatment, surgeries, recovery and a copy of her interview.
As of press time, the fundraiser has raised $189,538 from over 2,900 donations.
The fundraiser organizer also consistently posts updates about Cindy. According to the latest update on Cindy's GoFundMe page, she had another great day of therapy. A visitor also dropped by to give her some sweets.
