Golden Globes 2024: 'Barbie' Takes New Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement
On Jan. 7, Margot Robbie takes the stage along with co-stars to receive the first-ever Golden Globe award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures. Bubbling in a shimmery hot pink Giorgio Armani Prive gown-hand in hand with film director Greta Gerwig, she thanked all the Barbies and Kens everywhere.
"Last but not least, thank you so much to the Golden Globes for creating an award that celebrates movie fans. This is a movie about Barbie, but it's also a movie about humans. We made it for you, and we made it with love. Thank you for loving it back."
Eight nominees were selected for the new category, while every other category was restricted to six. To be eligible for this award, a film must earn at least $150 million at the box office globally, with a minimum of $100 million earned domestically, and must obtain high viewership digitally by well-known industry sources. It's been five years since the Academy announced (and renounced) a new category, however, the Golden Globes were steadfast in presenting new opportunities this award season.
"The idea behind it was to give popular films a place in this award season because those are the films that people have actually gone to see," Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne told Vanity Fair in an exclusive interview. "This is how movie theaters are kept alive by the fans who go to see films on the big screen, and we felt there was a need to recognize those movies as well."
Gerwig's fantasy comedy film Barbie has truly made a mark at the 81st annual Golden Globes with a total of nine nominations. The film has earned an 88% on the Tomatometer with an audience approval rating of 83%. Critics described the movie as thought-provoking with dazzling visuals and a stellar cast of actors. According to some TikTok users, viewers agree the film is a much-needed fist bump to girlhood.
