Tarek El Moussa Moved Into A Halfway House After Christina Hall Divorce: 'Didn't Trust Myself To Be Alone'
Tarek El Moussa took refuge in a halfway house following his public split from his ex-wife, Christina Hall.
The "Flipping 101" host opened up about the challenging period in his life during an appearance on Monday's episode of the podcast "The Jeff Fenster Show."
"When my ex left me, I went to some soul-searching places," El Moussa said of their 2016 split. "I actually lived in a halfway house. This is my first time sharing that."
El Moussa's decision to live in a communal setting stemmed from the emotional "turmoil" he was experiencing at the time.
"I didn't trust myself to be alone," he confessed on the podcast. "That's how bad I was."
Detailing his difficult journey, El Moussa explained, "The reason I ended up there is because I didn't know where to go, and I needed 24-hour care. It was pretty bad because I had lost everything, it felt like, overnight."
El Moussa admitted that he hit "rock bottom" following his divorce from the "Christina on the Coast" star and that it took him years to "get over" it.
"I did not want to be alive. It was that bad," he revealed.
Looking back at his marriage to Hall, the HGTV star said he felt there was a "dark cloud" over him a year before their eventual separation.
"I wasn't the best guy. I wasn't the best husband. Wasn't the best father, wasn't the best son, wasn't the best friend. I just wasn't the best human," El Moussa admitted.
He attributed some of his behavior to the challenges he faced during that period, including being diagnosed with two types of cancer.
After getting through that dark period, El Moussa said he is "so grateful" for his current life with his wife Heather Rae El Moussa and their son Tristan, whom they welcomed last year.
El Moussa revealed that he goes into further detail about the events leading to this dark place in his upcoming memoir, "Flip Your Life," scheduled for release on Feb. 6.
The memoir will delve into his health issues, personal struggles, steroid addiction and journey to becoming a successful entrepreneur.
El Moussa and Hall, who tied the knot in 2009, announced their separation seven years later in December 2016.
E! News reported that the pair had an altercation involving a gun at their California home a few months before the announcement, with police responding to a "call of a possibly suicidal male with a gun."
El Moussa later stated that he had not intended to harm himself and that the gun was for protection against wild animals while on a hike.
El Moussa filed for divorce in 2017. The exes, who share daughter Taylor, 13, and son Brayden, 8, finalized their split the following year.
Hall married her third husband, Josh Hall, in 2022. She has a 4-year-old son, Hudson, from her second marriage to Ant Anstead.
