Sofia Vergara Breaks Silence On Marital Breakdown After Joe Manganiello Divorce
Sofia Vergara spoke about her shocking split from her former husband, Joe Manganiello, last year.
In a new interview with the Spanish-language daily newspaper El País, Vergara, 51, shared the reason for her breakup with Manganiello, 47. She admitted they could not agree on their plans for their family, particularly on having children.
"My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids, and I didn't want to be an old mom," the "Modern Family" star explained. "I feel it's not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that's not for me anymore."
Vergara shares a son with her ex-husband, Joe Gonzales, and admitted that she did not have plans to have more kids.
"I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I'm ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children," Vergara continued.
"I'm almost in menopause; it's the natural way of things. When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while, and then I'll give it back to him and go on with my life; that's what I have to do."
The "Griselda" actress and "Magic Mike" actor sparked divorce rumors when fans noticed that she spent her 51st birthday with friends sans the "True Blood" star. His birthday tribute also raised several eyebrows, with many speculating their marriage was already over because he shared a blurry photo on Instagram and only captioned it with "¡¡¡Feliz Cumpleaños Sofía!!!" Some said the lack of endearment already hinted at trouble in paradise.
"Am I the only one who doesn't like the way it sounds? 'Sofia'.... not even 'My love, My beloved wife,'" one asked in the comments section at the time. Another added, "Ok, this is weird. I'm scared."
Just days after Manganiello's "dry" birthday tribute to Vergara, they released a joint statement announcing their separation.
"We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives," the couple said in a statement to Page Six.
People noted that the two were still seen on a glamorous dinner date the previous month before the announcement.
