Emily Blunt Apologizes To 'Oppenheimer' Co-Star Cillian Murphy For Injuring 'That Famous Cheekbone'
Emily Blunt publicly apologized to her 'Oppenheimer' co-star Cillian Murphy for inadvertently injuring him during a scene that ultimately didn't make it into the final cut of the film.
In a conversation with 'The Sun,' Blunt, who portrayed Robert Oppenheimer's wife Katherine, detailed how she had to repeatedly slap Murphy. Uncertain about the force, she had both director Christopher Nolan and Murphy, 47, encouraging her during the intense moment.
"Sorry about your cheekbone, Cillian," said the 40-year-old actress.
She shared how Nolan urged her to hit co-star Murphy during a scene before grabbing him by the collar after being initially hesitant. Reflecting on the scene, Blunt humorously remembered, "Over ten takes, that very famous cheekbone became even more prominent — and it's not even in the movie."
Meanwhile, Murphy, who portrayed the wartime scientist in the blockbuster film, recently received a Golden Globe for his compelling performance grappling with the moral complexities of developing the atomic bomb.
Blunt praised Murphy, affectionately calling him "Mr. Ocean Eyes" and expressing admiration for his captivating and "mesmerizing" performance in 'Oppenheimer.'
"He was an amazing scene partner," she said of Murphy. "... He's a wonderful friend. He's captivating. He's mesmerizing in this role. Everything was such a masterclass watching him."
Both actors, nominated for Oscars, have received critical acclaim for their roles in the the movie. The film leads with 13 Oscar nods, including nominations for Best Director and Best Film.
