Prince William cracked a joke about the challenging past few weeks the royal family faced during his speech at a recent charity event.

The Prince of Wales resumed his royal duties following King Charles' cancer diagnosis and attended London's Air Ambulance Charity Gala at The OWO in Central London on Wednesday.

After acknowledging the supportive and kind messages his family received following his wife Kate Middleton's abdominal surgery and his father's cancer diagnosis, he cracked a light-hearted joke, making the audience laugh.

"It's fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather 'medical' focus. So I thought I'd come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all," the former pilot for East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) quipped.

He also poked fun at Tom Cruise, his "fellow pilot," after thanking him for supporting the charity gala.

"And Tom, if you would not mind not borrowing either of the new helicopters for the next 'Mission: Impossible,' it would be appreciated," he teased the Hollywood star.

Prince William added, "We have all seen on our screens that -- how can I put it -- you seem to have a different take on 'normal wear and tear' to the rest of us. It's not the kind that buffs out."

According to GB News, the royal seemingly referenced an action scene in the 2018 film "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" where two helicopters crashed into each other and ended up in flames.

After his light-hearted remarks, Prince William appealed for a new fleet to be added to the air ambulance charity so they could go on with saving more lives.

"Our capital city needs a new fleet, and we are up against time. The clue really is in the appeal's name. By September, we need the two new birds -- decked with the latest kit such as night vision -- in our skies," he said.

Prince William reportedly began piloting missions for the EAAA in July 2015 after completing job-specific training involving a simulator, aircraft and in-flight skills.

In July 2017, the eldest son of King Charles and the late Princess Diana reported for his last shift with the organization.

"I have loved being part of a team of professional, talented people [who] save lives every day. My admiration for our country's medical and emergency services community could not be stronger," he said at the time.
