Elon Musk Funds Gina Carano’s Lawsuit Against Disney For 'Mandalorian' Termination
Actress Gina Carano is suing Lucasfilms and Disney after being dropped from the 'The Mandalorian' TV series in 2021, citing discrimination and unlawful termination.
Her complaint was filed Tuesday in California federal court, alleging she was booted off the show for vocalizing right-wing beliefs on social media. The 41-year-old alleges she was targeted unfairly while her male co-stars were permitted to speak freely about similar topics without harassment.
Carano's post read: "Most people today don't realize that to get to the point where Naxi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?"
She announced the lawsuit publicly on Sunday in an open letter on Twitter, now known as X, reciting a statement from Lucasfilms regarding her termination.
"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm & there are no plans for her to be in the future," the post read, in part. "Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural & religious identities are abhorrent & unacceptable."
The actress defended herself, saying she was hunted down because her views were "not in line with the acceptable narrative of the time," and that her words were twisted to demonize and dehumanize her.
"It was a bullying smear campaign aimed at silencing, destroying & making an example out of me," the star claimed.
She continued: "The thing is I never even used aggressive language. I shared thought provoking quotes, pictures, memes & occasionally I used my own words, not with aggression but with respect & the occasional comedy to keep the mood light in dark times."
Last year, billionaire Elon Musk, 52, who acquired Twitter for $44 billion, announced major policy changes to the service, including promising to fund the legal bill of X users who have been discriminated against due to activity on his platform.
"We're proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano's lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X," head of business operations Joe Benarroch told The Hollywood Reporter.
According to CNBC, the former 'Star Wars' actress is seeking reinstatement in 'The Mandalorian' series and monetary damages for the loss of her pay and her future employment as a result of her termination.
"Thank you to all the people who have supported me & made your voices heard," Carano said via X. "I pray God blesses each & every one of you."
