‘Friends’ Actor Matthew Perry Snubbed By BAFTAs’ In Memoriam; Netizens React
Netizens reacted after Matthew Perry, who was best known for his role as Chandler Bing on "Friends" and for starring in movies like "17 Again" and "The Whole Nine Yards," allegedly got snubbed at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony.
During the ceremony that took place Sunday at London's Royal Festival Hall, Hannah Waddingham performed a solo rendition of Joe Stilgoe's special arrangement of Cyndi Lauper's song "Time After Time" as part of the In Memoriam segment, which honors those in the film industry who passed away in the last 12 months.
However, the "Friends" star, who passed in October 2023 at age 54, was not included in the tribute.
With this, fans and netizens shared their thoughts and reactions on X, formerly Twitter. Many argued that while Perry was popular for starring in the TV series "Friends," he also starred in movies.
"Shocking omission of Matthew Perry [in the] in memoriam section tonight -- yes, he was famous for a TV show, but he was also a movie actor...poor show," stated one netizen.
"Mattew Perry starred in FILMS, also wrote scripts and did production work. But BAFTAs included Tina Turner as an... actor (!)" wrote a second user.
A third netizen opined, "THe #BAFTAs not including Matthew Perry in their In Memoriam section is my village origin story."
"[I[ kept thinking they must be saving him until last, but no, they actually missed Matthew Perry off the In Memoriam section. Wow," tweeted someone else.
"Matthew Perry 100% DESERVED to be in the memorial for the BAFTAs. He was not just known for friends. He appeared in many MANY films. @BAFTA, disgraceful," said a fifth X user.
"I love the BAFTAs so much right. I watch it religiously every year. But to not include Matthew Perry in the In Memoriam is actually shocking," another commented.
Responding to an X user asking about Perry's absence from the In Memoriam segment of the awards ceremony, BAFTA tweeted, "Matthew Perry will be remembered in this year's TV Awards ceremony..."
A spokesperson for the organization also told People, "I can confirm Matthew Perry will be remembered in our forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards."
Matthew Perry allegedly died of an apparent drowning in his home at Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, California, on Oct. 28, 2023. He was 54 years old.
However, in December, the LA County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that the actor's official cause of death was "acute effects of ketamine," per Page Six.
