Watch: Emma Stone Suffers Wardrobe Malfunction As She Wins Oscar For Best Actress
Emma Stone ripped her dress while accepting the Oscar for Best Actress at Sunday night's ceremony.
The 35-year-old actress, who won for her performance in Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things," suffered a wardrobe malfunction as she came onstage to receive the award from past winners Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence, Sally Field and Jessica Lange.
"My dress is broken," an emotional Stone told the audience and viewers as she turned around to show the busted back of her silk jacquard gown, as seen in a video published by ITV.
Stone then jokingly blamed her "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and "La La Land" collaborator Ryan Gosling.
"I think it happened during 'I'm Just Ken,'" she said, referring to Gosling's performance of his "Barbie" hit earlier in the ceremony.
For this year's Oscars, Stone wore a custom mint-colored Louis Vuitton strapless gown featuring an architectural peplum skirt, according to People.
She paired the gown with a 30-carat yellow diamond necklace from the Louis Vuitton High Jewelry collection.
During her speech, Stone thanked the director, her co-stars, and everyone who worked on "Poor Things" before giving a shoutout to her family, including her husband, Dave McCary, and their daughter, Louise Jean.
"I really just want to thank my family. My mom, my brother Spencer, my dad, my husband Dave [McCary], I love you so much. And, most importantly, my daughter, who's gonna be 3 in three days and has turned our lives technicolor," Stone said.
The actress went on to quote a lyric from Taylor Swift's song "Bigger Than the Whole Sky," saying, "I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl."
After delivering her speech, Stone asked the audience not to "look at the back of my dress" as she left the stage.
When she later spoke with the media backstage, Stone shared that the dress had been repaired, according to the Associated Press.
"They sewed me back in, which was wonderful," the actress said.
She also explained why she thinks she ripped her gown during Gosling's performance of "I'm Just Ken."
"I genuinely do think I blew it during 'I'm Just Ken,'" she said. "I was so amazed by Ryan, and that number just blew my mind."
Stone's Oscar win on Sunday night marked her second Academy Award Best Actress trophy. She won her first Best Actress Oscar in 2017 for "La La Land."
Stone was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for "Birdman" and "The Favourite" at the 2015 and 2019 Oscars, respectively.
Stone beat Lily Gladstone ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Annette Bening ("Nyad"), Carey Mulligan ("Maestro") and Sandra Hüller ("Anatomy of a Fall") in the Best Actress category at the 2024 Oscars.
"Poor Things" also took home the Oscar for Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design.
