Jets QB Aaron Rodgers Could Run For Vice President In 2024 Elections, RFK Confirms
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers could be exchanging his jersey and cleats for a coat and a gavel as reports suggest the NFL star is considering running for the second-highest office in the country.
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmed to the New York Times on Tuesday that he has been speaking with Rodgers "pretty continuously" about the vice president position.
The news comes as a surprise to fans who expect the 40-year-old future Hall of Famer to return to the field and start for the Jets this upcoming season. Rodgers was sidelined for much of the 2023 season after suffering an Achilles tendon rupture on his first match against the Buffalo Bills.
It is unknown how possibly running for the Vice Presidency would affect his career as a football athlete. Especially since he recently stated he hopes to play "two or three or four more years" in the league.
A-Rod boasts a decorated 17-year NFL career. He is a four-time NFL Most Valuable Player, a Super Bowl Champion with the Green Bay Packers, a Super Bowl MVP, a four-time First Team All-Pro and a 10-time Pro Bowl selection. He was previously engaged to actress Shailene Woodley before the couple split in April 2022.
Rodgers and Kennedy have built a relationship over the years and the athlete even endorsed the politician in 2023. Both have been known to have controversial stances on COVID-19, vaccines and even politics.
A spokesperson for RFK also confirmed that aside from the NFL veteran, former professional wrestler Jesse Ventura is also on the VP shortlist.
"He's considering Aaron Rodgers and Jesse Ventura as running mates along with others on a shortlist," a Kennedy campaign spokesperson told NBC News.
In February, Kennedy said he would announce his running mate within the next 30 days. He is expected to make his final decision in the coming weeks.
