Gavin Rossdale Makes Rare Comment About Gwen Stefani Divorce: 'Simple Shame In My Life'
Gavin Rossdale got candid about how his divorce from his ex-wife, Gwen Stefani, left him with shame.
The Bush frontman joined former ABC News hosts Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes in the latest episode of the "Amy & T.J." podcast. During the chat, Holmes asked about the "private shame" they shared as people who went through a divorce amid controversies in their past relationships.
Holmes previously made headlines when his affair with Robach leaked in 2022. Meanwhile, Rossdale and Stefani divorced following rumors that he cheated on her with their nanny.
"My clearest, simplest shame is that you have an ideal... my parents were both married three times each, a very colorful background. I never thought I'd ever get divorced," Rossdale said.
"If there's a simple shame in my life... I think there are no accidents in life, and you are where you're meant to be. I don't live in regret. Life just unfolds as it should, whether it's comfortable or uncomfortable. It just is what it is."
If there was one thing he was concerned about following their split, it was their kids. The exes share three sons -- Kingston, 17, Zuma, 15, and Apollo, 10. He admitted there was a "loss" when he saw them at times, and he wished he had more "connection" with their mom.
"The biggest thing would be, sometimes I wish that when you see the kids, sometimes there's a loss," he continued. "It'd be nice if there was more of a connection with the person who made them with me."
Rossdale and Stefani were married from 2002 to 2016. In an interview with People in September 2023, the "Hollaback" singer briefly spoke about the divorce and admitted that at the time, her life "fell apart."
"Everybody pretty much knows that at one point, my life fell apart. It was terrible, and there's so many people out there that have gone through the same thing," she said.
"When that happened, I had to literally start over again. It was a reset of my life."
Stefani has since moved on from Rossdale and is now happily married to Blake Shelton. The "God Gave Me You" singer is very close with his stepsons. He even admitted that they were among the reasons he decided to quit his "The Voice" gig because he wanted to spend more time with them.
"They've taught me something about myself that I never knew: I'm more than just a country singer or a goofy guy. I'm someone they actually lean on, and that's not a responsibility that I ever had and not something that I ever considered even being into," he said. "It's a different kind of self-worth. Maybe it's the opposite of self-worth because you put yourself way down on the rung, and they move up ahead of you."
