Kathy Griffin Compares Herself To 'Britney And Kanye Combined' While On A Psych Hold
Kathy Griffin made an unexpected remark about Britney Spears and Kanye West during her recent TV appearance.
The comedian appeared on Tuesday's episode of "The View" to promote her upcoming stand-up tour. During the interview, she recounted her road to redemption following an infamous photoshoot where she held a fake bloody, decapitated head of Donald Trump.
"Six years I was out of work because of that [expletive]," she said as the audio cut out. "All about a picture! A picture I took making fun of the president. Which is what you're supposed to do as a comic."
Co-host Sara Haines pointed out that Griffin has "survived so much" over the years, including her "career cancellation" and the "federal investigation over the Trump photo controversy." The comedian confirmed it, adding that there was a "no-fly list, Interpol list, stopped at every airport" due to the investigation, and she was ultimately cleared.
Aside from that, Griffin was diagnosed with lung cancer, and she survived it. She also struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues.
"Pill addiction, suicide attempt and I was on a psych hold for three days. I know you can tell why," Griffin jokingly added. "I was on a psych hold, so I was like Britney and Kanye combined. It's like I walked into my own act."
Her mention of Spears and West received mixed reactions, with some of the audience laughing. However, the majority groaned, per Decider.
But Griffin kept the segment going, adding, "I'm sober three-and-a-half years."
West and Spears have their fair share of mental health issues. Both were reportedly diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
In 2020, West took to social media and claimed that his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, allegedly tried to fly a doctor to him in Wyoming to lock him up.
"Kim was trying to fly to Wyoming with a doctor to lock me up like on the movie 'Get Out' because I cried about saving my daughter's life yesterday," the "Gold Digger" rapper wrote in a since-deleted tweet, People reported.
"If I get locked up like Mandela Ya'll will know why," he wrote in another tweet.
Meanwhile, Spears was involuntarily placed under a conservatorship in February 2008 by Judge Reva Goetz, appointing her father, James "Jamie" Spears, and attorney Andrew M. Wallet as her conservators. The 13-year conservatorship ended in November 2021.
The "Toxic" singer had been the subject of Griffin's joke in the past. The comedian previously appeared on Larry King's talk show "Larry King Now," and she asked the host how many times Spears had appeared there and how her guesting had turned out.
"She's not all there," she quipped.
King said Spears was "okay" before asking her, "So what's your point?"
"I'm saying that I hope you were gentle with her because she's, you know, fragile," Griffin said of Spears.
The host was still confused about what Griffin meant and asked her again what she was saying.
"I just wanted to know if you got through to her in a way that her doctors couldn't," Griffin said before changing the topic.
