Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst Open To Work On 'Spider-Man 4'; No Talks Yet, Says Sam Raimi
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are open to working on another "Spider-Man" movie years after the trilogy they starred in wrapped up.
The 48-year-old actor and the 41-year-old actress portrayed Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" movie releases in 2002, 2004 and 2007. More than the action-packed storylines, the trilogy centered on the onscreen couple's love story, with the "Spider-Man 3" ending scene showing Peter and Mary Jane dancing the night away to mark their happy ending.
Interestingly, fans may have not seen the last of Maguire and Dunst's onscreen chemistry yet, as both Hollywood stars have voiced their desire to do a follow-up to their version of the iconic Marvel franchise.
Just last month, Dunst was asked in an interview with Marie Claire if she would ever do another superhero movie.
She quickly gave an honest response, saying, "Yes. Because you get paid a lot of money, and I have two children, and I support my mother."
Three years prior, she also gave an affirmative response when asked if she would be open to reprising her role as Mary Jane for the big screen.
"I would do it. Why not? That would be fun. I would never say no to something like that," Dunst told Marc Malkin of Variety at the 2021 AFI Fest before adding, "I would be old MJ at this point with little Spidey Babies."
Maguire, who made a shocking but welcome cameo in the Tom Holland-led "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in 2021, has also expressed his interest in continuing the storyline of his version of Peter Parker.
"I love these films and I love all of the different series. If these guys called me and said, 'Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?' or 'Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?' It would be a 'yes!' Because why wouldn't I [not] want to do that?" the actor was quoted as saying by Variety last year.
Rumors about a possible "Spider-Man 4" installment emerged last month after "Spider-Man 3's" Sandman, Thomas Haden Church, made a bold claim that he had heard about a "Spider-Man" project starring Maguire again as the web-slinging superhero.
"Sam Raimi is doing, from what I've heard, he's going to do another standalone 'Spider-Man' movie with Tobey," the 63-year-old actor said in an exclusive interview with the New York Post.
But contrary to what Church said, Raimi dispelled the notion that he was making another "Spider-Man" film years after his trilogy ended.
When the 64-year-old film director showed up at WonderCon 2024 over the weekend, CBR host Kevin Polowy brought up the rumored fourth installment in his "Spider-Man" movie series.
"Well, I haven't heard about that yet. I did read that but I'm not actually working on it yet," Raimi said during the conference.
"I mean, Marvel and Columbia [are] so successful with their current 'Spider-Man,' and the track there, and I don't know that they're going back to me, and say, 'We folks, we can also tell that story!' I'm not sure but I love all the new 'Spider-Man' movies."
"I loved 'Spider-Man: No Way Home.' It was really super powerful seeing Tobey again in it," he added.
When Polowy asked him a follow-up question on whether Maguire could be starring in a new "Spider-Man" release, the filmmaker responded, "I haven't talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures."
"But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,' so I'm on great terms with them."
"I'm sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don't know," he concluded.
