Rihanna Slammed For Racy Nun Magazine Cover: 'Isn't This Blasphemy?'
Rihanna raised eyebrows after her cover photo for Interview magazine was released.
The "Diamonds" singer is gracing the cover of Interview magazine's latest issue. In the photo and video shared on the magazine's official Instagram account, she was seen donning provocative clothing, including a black habit, which is traditionally worn by nuns.
She paired it with an oversized white shirt left open to expose her cleavage and vamped up with bright red lipstick and a light blue eyeshadow. In the clip, Rihanna nearly exposed one of her breasts while posing for the photoshoot.
Rihanna's look on the cover stirred several netizens who were offended. Many claimed that it was disrespectful to Catholics and Christians.
"Isn't this blasphemy??" one netizen asked.
Another added, "Blasphemy" with a crying face emoji.
"Mocking Christianity as usual! Would you mock another religion like Islam? No, so why mock Christian's?" a different netizen asked.
"@badgalriri remember when you got hella backlash for putting Islamic music in your savage Fenty runway shows? You had to apologize to the Muslim community bc you 'didn't know.' Yeah, we want that same energy for this BS HERE!!!!!! You bettaaaa delete it !!!! Have some respect for Christianity and, most importantly, GOD!" another user opined.
"Sorry, but NO. This isn't okay...this is blasphemous and totally mocks Christianity," a different commenter said.
Several stressed that the look was "unnecessary" and "disrespectful."
Someone else asked, "Is this the ritual before the album drops?"
Meanwhile, a different user seemingly questioned Rihanna and her team's creativity.
"Happy to see these comments. It's tiring all this anti-Catholicism. This new bigotry. Is it that fun always mocking Catholics in the industry? Every movie, song, TV show, book, podcast. You don't have anything more creative to show?" the netizen wrote.
A clip from the Instagram post was shared on X, formerly Twitter, and the netizens shared the same responses.
One said it was "disrespectful, disgusting and classless."
Another described it as a "soft porn from an entertainer" with a face with rolling eyes emoji.
Despite the immense backlash, some of the "Umbrella" singer's fans stood by her.
"Man marrying Man is okay, but when it's bad gal riri haters will talk," one commented on Instagram.
Another wrote, "Don't tell others what to do," in response to the backlash.
Bella Thorne also seemingly approved of Rihanna's magazine cover as she left a smiling face with a heart-eyes emoji on the original post.
