Prince Harry Listed US As His New Country After King Charles Asked Him To Vacate Frogmore Cottage
Prince Harry acknowledged the United States as his primary home years after he left the United Kingdom, according to a report.
In 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to step back from their royal duties and relocate to California. Years after the move, Prince Harry updated his records to clarify that he no longer resides in Britain, based on the documents obtained by the Daily Mail.
In the filing published by Companies House, Prince Harry's New "Country/State Usually Resident" was updated to reflect the USA. Previous records showed it was the United Kingdom.
The new details were filed at Companies House for Prince Harry's eco-travel Travalyst on June 2, 2023.
Queen Elizabeth gifted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the Frogmore Cottage following their 2018 royal wedding. It was refurbished through the Sovereign Grant and served as their official residence in London. Prince Harry's tenancy in Frogmore Cottage ran out in June 2023.
Months before that, several outlets reported that King Charles had asked his son and daughter-in-law to vacate the property. Rebecca English, royal editor for the Daily Mail, said in one episode of "Palace Confidential" that following His Majesty's decision, Prince Harry "won't actually have a place to stay at in the U.K."
British journalist and investigative reporter Tom Bower blamed the Sussexes for the King's decision. According to him, the royal couple provoked the British monarch after their infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey, Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan" and Prince Harry's memoir "Space" and interviews on "60 Minutes" and "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert."
"Harry and Meghan provoked him [King Charles] with Harry's disgraceful book and the interviews he gave," Bower told Page Six. "I mean, what did he expect? Harry wanted the royal family to come on bended knee begging for forgiveness, and he's completely crossed the spectrum, he's in the mad wilderness of deranged victimhood."
Additionally, Prince Harry's change of residence also raised questions on whether he would remain a Counsellor of State.
"We are really in uncharted waters here: the Prince Harry situation is not something the law easily allows for," Dr. Craig Prescott, a constitutional law expert, told the Daily Mail. "The idea of the second son of the King choosing a life away from royal duties is not something the law has thought about, and I can imagine that Buckingham Palace would be concerned by that. The King had the chance to remove him with the counsellor-of-state legislation last year but chose not to."
The Counsellors of State were created to cover for the monarch's short-term absences where regency would be unnecessary. The members are the four adults next in succession who are at least 21 years old. At present, they are Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Princess Beatrice. Queen Camilla was added as the monarch's wife.
In November 2022, King Charles proposed to add his siblings, Princess Anne and Prince Edwards, as Counsellors of State. The change required amendment to the Regency Act of 1937, and they were officially added a month later, per Town & Country.
