Former HGTV Star Charles 'Todd' Hill Sentenced To 4 Years In Jail For Multi-Million Dollar Scams And Fraud
A former HGTV star was ordered to serve four years in jail last week for his connection to multi-million dollar scams and fraud.
According to a press release from the County of Santa Clara, Charles "Todd" Hill must also pay back nearly 10 million dollars after committing real estate and financial fraud against 11 victims.
Hill was the former star of HGTV's "Flip It to Win It." The series was a TV show where the 58-year-old purchased dilapidated homes to fix them up and resell them for profit.
He was indicted in November 2019 after he committed multiple frauds against multiple victims, according to the release. Hill was convicted last year of multiple fraud schemes, including a Ponzi scheme before the show.
Hill of Los Gatos reportedly took investors' money meant for buying homes to support his own lavish lifestyle instead. He was accused of using fraudulent information to receive loans and created fake balance sheets to cover up the theft, according to KGW-8. Evidence showed that Hill spent the laundered money on hotels, vacations, luxury cars, and an apartment in San Francisco.
According to the release, Hill, also known as "Mr. Flip It," instead spent millions on overbudget remodels, laundered the profits, and pocketed millions of dollars.
"Some see the huge amount of money in Silicon Valley real estate as a business opportunity," District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. "Others, unfortunately, see it as a criminal opportunity — and we will hold those people strictly accountable."
Hill was taken into custody on Tuesday to begin his prison sentence.
