Did Taylor Swift Cry During 'Eras Tour' Because Of Matty Healy, Not Joe Alwyn?
Taylor Swift had some emotionally charged moments during the first few months of her "Eras Tour" last year, and her fans think at least one may be related to Matty Healy.
Clips of Swift getting emotional or crying during her "Eras Tour" concerts in spring and early summer last year garnered attention online anew after the pop superstar released her new album, "The Tortured Poets Department," Friday.
In the 13th track, "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart," Swift sings about performing and pretending she was "having the time of her life" while quietly dealing with heartbreak and falling apart on the inside.
Swifties speculated that she was talking about playing her "Eras Tour" shows amid her breakups with Joe Alwyn and Healy in the first five months of 2023.
Fan-captured videos showed Swift getting choked up while singing her 2017 Zayn Malik duet, "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," at Soldier Field in Chicago in June 2023 -- around the same time it was announced that she had ended her short-lived romance with the 1975 frontman.
In the video, the Grammy winner's voice cracked and trembled as she played the piano and sang, "Wondering if I dodged a bullet or just lost the love of my life."
Swift's new album had fans flocking to the old footage once more, with some now speculating that the singer had gotten emotional over Healy rather than Alwyn.
"Who's here after hearing 'I Can Do It With a Broken Heart?" one fan commented under a clip of the moment shared on TikTok.
"We were thinking her emotions were about Joe, but now thinking it was the breakup with [Matty Healy]," another wrote.

Just three months prior to this show, Swift was also captured by fans on video crying while singing "Champagne Problems," a song about a failed relationship, at another "Eras Tour" concert, which took place just days before her breakup with Alwyn was made public in April 2023.
Fans speculated that Swift got emotional over Alwyn while singing the lyrics: "Sometimes you just don't know the answer / 'Til someone's on their knees and asks you / 'She would've made such a lovely bride' / 'What a shame she's f**ked in the head,' they said."
Swift and Alwyn's relationship was officially confirmed in May 2017, though Swifties believe that the pair began dating as early as late 2016.
On April 8, 2023, Entertainment Tonight broke the news that Swift and Alwyn called it quits a "few weeks ago." The exact date of their split was not disclosed.
People reported, citing unnamed sources, that Swift and Alwyn had been "talking about marriage" just "a few months" before the breakup.
Shortly after their split, Swift moved on with Healy. The two musicians were spotted together on multiple outings in New York City in May 2023, with an unnamed insider telling People at the time that Swift was "happy."
But the short-lived romance lasted just one month before TMZ reported in early June 2023 that Swift and Healy parted ways.
Nearly a year later, Swift seemingly opened up about what she went through during that time in her latest album.
In "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart," Swift sings, "They said, 'Babe, you gotta fake it till you make it' and I did / 'Lights, camera, Bitch, smile' / 'Even when you wanna die.'"
She continues, "All the pieces of me shattered as the crowd was chanting more / I was grinning like I'm winning, I was hitting my marks / 'Cause I can do it with a broken heart."
According to People, the lyrics also appeared to refer to two different lovers who left Swift disappointed.
"He said he'd love me all his life / But that life was too short," she sings early on in the song.
She later sings, "He said he'd love me for all time / But that time was quite short."
But it wasn't just Swift's love life that seemingly brought her to tears during her concerts.
The singer became emotional when fans surprised her during two "Eras Tour" concerts in Atlanta, Georgia, in late April 2023.
In one of the concerts, around 80,000 fans in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium turned on their cell phone lights during Swift's performance of "Champagne Problems," showing her what looked like a sea of stars.
Swift appeared moved by the fans' gesture, tearing up as she thanked them after the song.
"I don't even know what to say. I love you so much. That was beautiful," she said in a video shared by a fan on TikTok.
Swifties repeated the stunt the following night, but this time during Swift's performance of "Marjorie," which is about the singer's late grandmother.
An emotional Swift also expressed her gratitude to the concertgoers after the song, saying, "How could you go and do that to me? It was a song about my grandmother who passed away. I just completely...like my knees went weak, genuinely. Like, that physically, I physically felt that. It was so beautiful of you to do that."
