O.J. Simpson's official cause of death is cancer.

The Hall of Fame football player's longtime attorney Malcolm LaVergne confirmed to TMZ and People that according to his death certificate, Simpson died at the age of 76 on April 10 from metastatic prostate cancer.

Simpson's death -- which was announced by his family on April 11 -- came after he spent several months in hospice care.

LaVergne, who Simpson appointed as the executor of his estate, told People that his client initially thought he was cancer-free, but the disease later recurred "with a vengeance."

"I was pretty certain it was prostate cancer; ultimately, that was the cause," the lawyer said.

He added, "He thought it (sic) had beaten it. I thought this was done, but you know how cancers go. They come back, and they come back with a vengeance."

Simpson first shared that he was diagnosed with a then-undisclosed form of cancer in May 2023.

In a video he uploaded on X, formerly Twitter, he said he had been battling cancer for at least a few years by that point and had completed chemotherapy treatment.

Simpson revealed that he also caught COVID-19 while undergoing cancer treatment.

But the former athlete told his followers that he was "over the chemo" and was "healthy now."

"It looks like I beat it. I'm happy about that," Simpson said.

Earlier this year, he shut down rumors that he was staying in a hospice.

"Hospice? Hospice? You talking about hospice?" Simpson said in a viral video posted on X in February. "No, I'm not in any hospice, I don't know who put that out there."

The legendary broadcaster said at the time that he was gearing up to host pals at his Las Vegas home for the 2024 Super Bowl and that "all is well."

Simpson posted what would later become his final health update on Feb. 11.

In a video message, Simpson said his health was "good," though he admitted he was "dealing with some issues."

"I think I'm just about over it and I'll be back on that golf course hopefully in a couple of weeks," he told his followers.

Two months later, Simpson's family announced in a statement on X that he had passed away.

He was cremated on April 17 during a private gathering of friends and family in Las Vegas.

His death brought his past controversies and the double murder he was accused -- and later acquitted -- of committing back to the spotlight.

After what many dubbed at the time as "The Trial of the Century," Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of the stabbing deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.

Simpson was later found liable for Brown Simpson's and Goldman's deaths in a 1997 civil lawsuit and was ordered to pay their families $33.5 million.

At the time of his death, Brown Simpson's and Goldman's families had received just a small fraction of that amount.

While Simpson's lawyer initially said that the Goldmans would get nothing from his client's estate, LaVergne later walked back his comments, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he will invite the two families to go over the late NFL legend's possessions.
