The royal wedding that captivated the world reportedly almost didn't happen.

Four years prior to exchanging vows, Prince William and Kate Middleton went their separate ways.

Meeting on the benches of Saint Andrews University in Scotland, the lovebirds began their journey.

"When I first met Kate I knew there was something very special about her," King Charles III's eldest son said in an interview in November 2010. "I knew there was possibly something that I wanted to explore there. We ended up being friends for a while and that just sort of was a good foundation."

In 2004, they temporarily parted ways before summer, spending their holidays apart. However, their relationship faced another setback in 2007 when they broke up again. Prince William, 41, reportedly felt pressure to marry his sweetheart and struggled with commitment. In 2006, Kate reportedly declined an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to attend Christmas at Sandringham, insisting she would only accept once she had a ring on her finger, according to reports.

In Robert Lacey's book, "Battle of Brothers" (2020), William had reportedly "begun to wonder whether he had found the right girl at the wrong time."

The young prince reportedly opted to enjoy his life as a military officer, indulging in reported "drinking sprees." Meanwhile, Kate earned the moniker, 'Waity Katie,' in the British press. Reports from other women about his alleged nightclub outings implied that William behaved like a bachelor. Consequently, he chose to end his relationship with his partner... over the phone.

"On 11 April 2007, Kate emerged from a work appointment at Jigsaw, the fashion boutique where she had recently started working, to take a call from William in a conference room that was safe from prying ears," Lacey claims. "She closed the door for over an hour. When she came out, she was single."

"I can't... It just isn't going to work. It isn't fair to you," William reportedly told his future wife, according to Christopher Andersen's book "William and Kate: A Royal Love Story."

Prince William eventually reached out to her again, and their exchanges resumed approximately ten weeks after the separation.
